History of Turuk Kothi

Built in 1848 in the uncharted territory of Sikkim ‘The Land of Peace and Tranquility’ the grand old mountain estate is now home to the fifth-generation of the ancestral Pradhan family – standing proud century after century.

The Pradhan family (also known as Newars) played an imperative role to strengthen the Sikkimese economy during the 18th and 19th century. With permission from the Sikkimese Maharaja, the Newars tradesman, headed by Laxmi Das Pradhan started to mint coins, namely Dheba Paisa and Cheptey Paisa, in the name of the Sikkimese ruler. They were all known as Taksari meaning ’Owners of Minting Houses’

Turuk Kothi was home to the first minter of Sikkim, Laxmi Das Pradhan, and also served as the District Headquarter for many years. Even after over 160 years, the descendants of Laxmi Das Pradhan continue to live in the same house. Today, Shri Hirendra Pradhan (the fifth descendent of Laxmi Das Pradhan) and his heart warming family welcome their guests from the world over to enjoy a quiet gate away from the stresses of urban life in search of peace and solitude at Turuk Kothi—your heritage homestay.
